Matthew's Birth Story

Yes, I have a birth story even though we went in for a planned c-section. The nurse from my doctor's office called on Monday afternoon and said that we needed to be at the hospital at 7:30am. I'm thinking not bad, we can get up at a decent time, shower, get ready, then drive into Austin to the hospital. At 6:00am on Friday, Raul had just finished putting our bags in the truck when my cell phone rang. It was Labor & Delivery asking if we were on our way. Apparently we needed to be at the hospital at 5:30am and surgery was scheduled for 7:30am. We made it to the hospital at 6:45am and we were prepped...bloodwork, urine analysis, blood pressure, health history, etc...at 7:30am we were told we were going to be bumped for another surgery and that we would go back to the OR at 8:30am. Well, when 8:30am rolled around we were bumped yet again because of an emergency c-section...the mom was in distress as well as her babies (twins) and she was pre-term, so I was really okay with this...it wasn't like Matthew was in a hurry to come out. Raul and I were quite a sight at the time...waiting all ready to go have our baby and sitting there playing games on our iPhones and commenting on Facebook.
At 9:45am we were walked back to the OR. I had my spinal put in...that hurt a bit, but wasn't too bad. The anesthesiologist was great. It was odd feeling my legs going numb and then at one point wanting to bend my toes to stretch them out and not being able to. Raul came in and sat by me and held my hand. at 10:21am, Matthew was born and he was born with a massive set of lungs on him. I think everyone on the maternity ward heard him screaming. Raul went with him for his check-up.
Things have been going well. For the first 24hrs I went about  six to eight hours between my pain meds and felt amazing. I wanted to get up and walk around, but obviously, what your mind wants to do isn't what your body is capable of doing. At 10pm I was able to get up and walk in the room for a bit. It was slow...my legs hurt, but by today over 24hrs later I am up walking around. I feel good. I think having a planned c-section is way better than an unexpected one.
Joshua is in love with his little brother. Yesterday, when he saw him for the first time he gave him kisses and kept petting his forehead. Today, when he showed up to visit Joshua immediately went to the little bassinet and waved over the edge of it and said, "Hi Matthew, Hi Matthew". Matthew cries when he is getting a diaper change and Joshua says to him, "It's okay, Matthew". He loves giving kisses to Matthew and is pretty fascinated with watching Matthew eat.
